The Evangelist Windows

The four round Evangelist windows are located on the north wall of the Nave. The Evangelists are always shown as winged creatures. Wings symbolize a divine mission, so angels and cherubs are also shown with wings. These windows remind us of the four Gospels found in the New Testament, written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

St. Matthew

The winged created with a man's face represents Matthew because his Gospel narrative traces the human genealogy of Jesus.

St. Mark

The winged creature with a lion's face is the symbol for Mark because his Gospel narrative begins with, "The voice of One crying in the wilderness" which suggests the roar of a lion.

St. Luke

The winged creature with the head of an ox is the symbol for Luke because an ox is an animal of sacrifice, and Luke stresses the atoning sacrifice of Jesus.

St. John

The winged creature with an eagle's head is the emblem of John because in his narrative he rises to loftiest heights in dealing with the mind of Christ.
